Description:

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) Emergency Department (ED) has an emergency physician and team of nurses available to provide 24-hour care to those requiring immediate or urgent assessment, diagnosis and treatment for injury and/or illness. Specialty consultation is available by request of the medical staff or by transfer to a designated hospital where tertiary care can be provided.

To address ED wait times, seasonal surges in patient volumes and the challenges seen in Kenora accessing primary care practitioners, LWDH launched the Nurse Practitioner (NP) Service as an extension of the ED in 2023. Upon arrival at the ED, patients undergo a comprehensive triage by skilled nurses and a level of acuity is assigned, allowing for efficient allocation of resources. Patients assessed as less acute, with a Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) score of 4 or 5, may be directed the NP Service.
